The organization has many enjoyable programs, events and activities that promotes camaraderie and that stimulates the mind. In 2023 alone, for our monthly meeting we had guest speakers providing informative talks on heart health, eye health, elder law, Einstein museum, county programs for seniors, scam prevention and others. In addition to speakers we have had numerous Bingo games and a wood craft project. Couple of times we had pizza and once we had an ice cream social. We also have coordinated two bus trips, one to Wind Creek Bethlehem Casino and a second to the Brownstone in Paterson for Oktoberfest. In addition, we coordinated group pricing to shows at Somerset Valley Players Playhouse (Hillsborough), Villagers Theatre (Somerset), Kelsey Theatre (West Windsor) and Music Mountain Theatre (Lambertville). Finally, we had Birthday Breakfasts at the Hillsborough Star Diner and a picnic at the Montgomery Veterans Park. We will close the year with our last Birthday Breakfast and an extravagant Holiday Party at the Otto Kaufman Community Center. Whew. What a busy year. Montgomery Senior Citizens (MSC) has a little over 100 members. Membership attrition for a organization for senior is a natural phenomenon because of health and relocation reasons. However, we are thriving with the addition of 58 new members in 2023 as of September 30, 2023. Of these, we typically enjoy the company of 35-40 members during each monthly meeting.
These are two separate organizations, but many seniors belong to both organizations. Both share the facility at the Otto Kaufman Community Center.
The Montgomery Senior (Wellness) Center is operated through a partnership between Montgomery Township and the Somerset County Office on Aging. The Center is open Monday thru Friday 9am to 4pm at the Otto Kaufman Center in Skillman. The Center offers a wide range of programs, games and experiences in a social and uplifting atmosphere intended to positively impact overall health. Programs and activities are designed to stimulate the mind and body while supporting healthy living, social interaction, and good nutrition. Lunch is offered each day for a suggested donation of $2.50. Through the county, bus service can be arranged for the residents of Montgomery Township. The Center Manager is Denise Crowley. She can be reached at dcrowley@montgomerynj.gov or 609-466-0846.
The Montgomery Township Senior Citizens, Inc. (aka Montgomery Senior Citizens) is a private non-profit organization that hosts social and educational events and activities for its members. It is not operated by the county or by the township. The organization also meets at the Otto Kaufman Center but only monthly, on the second Thursday of each month, at 1:00pm for the general meetings and weekly on Wednesday, at 12:30pm for the planning meetings. Unlike Montgomery Senior (Wellness) Center, no transportation is provided to attend the meetings. The organization organizes and sponsors trips, socials and programs inside and outside of the center for its members with some open to the general public. Additionally, the organization acts as a strong advocate for issues important to seniors.
We are governed through the framework outlined in our By-Laws. All members are entitled to have a copy of the By-Laws. You can view and download the By-Laws below. If you need a hard copy, you can request one via “Contact Us” and we will make sure to have a copy for you at the next meeting.
Strong internal communication is a necessary pillar in building any successful organization. Besides our meetings, the use email is our staple form of written communication. Over 93% of our membership can be reached with email. Sometimes we communicate using the telephone for more urgent matters.
We also have copies of our latest newsletter and calendar at the Otto Kaufman Community Center. They are in the slots by the Senior Center kitchen. And of course, all our latest information are posted on our website.
In addition, information on our next meeting is in the Montgomery News with an article, “A Senior Moment”, written by Lou Vaccaro, our president, and also in the Calendar section
The Executive Committee is readily available via telephone or email for communication in the other direction.
